Supporting Science Learning at Home
Here are some simple ways you can learn about science with your scholar at home.
Ask your scholar to use tools
Questions to Ask
Activities to Try
- What does this tool do?
- Can you help me measure?
- How much do we have?
- What is the temperature?
- How much does it weigh?
Activities to Try
- Let your scholar help you cook by measuring things using a measuring cup and spoon.
- Use thermometers to find out the temperature.
- When food shopping, use scales to weight fruits and veggies together.
Ask your scholar to observe
Questions to Ask
Activities to Try
- What do you see?
- How does that feel?
- Can you describe what you smell?
- How are these the same or different?
- Can you draw what you see?

- Go for a walk and see what you observe.
- Collect things from nature- rocks, leaves, flowers.
- Make drawings of plants and animals you see.

Ask your scholar to classify and sort
Questions to Ask
Activities to Try
- Can you group these by color? Shape?
- Can you make a pattern?
- Is this living or non-living? Hot or Cold? Heavy or Light?
Activities to Try
- Sort socks, blocks, shells, or anything you can find by different properties like shape, size, or color
- Look at different objects or pictures and decide what groups they belong in: hot/cold, living/non-living, wet/dry...
Ask your scholar to predict
Questions to Ask
Activities to Try
Be curious together! Predict what will happen if you do something and then test your hypothesis to see if you were right.
Suggestions:
- What will happen if we...put an ice cube near a sunny window? Pour oil into water? Put out bread for birds?
Activities to Try

Suggestions:
- Will an object sink or float in water?
- Will something change if we heat it up or freeze it?
- Does my pet prefer some things more than others?
